What is an ear infection?
Ear infections are very common, especially in children. They can be caused by bacteria and viruses. There are several types depending on what part of the ear is infected. The most common types are middle ear infections (otitis media) and outer ear infections (otitis externa).
Middle ear infections often start from a cold or other respiratory issue and can move to one or both ears through the eustachian tubes which become swollen and blocked leading to a buildup of mucus in the middle ear. Outer ear infections happen when the outer ear or ear canal becomes infected, often from water remaining in the ear canal (swimmer’s ear) or from damage to the ear canal.
Ear infection symptoms
Common signs and symptoms of an ear infection include:
- Ear pain
- Tugging or pulling at ear in children
- Loss of hearing
- Fussiness or crying more than usual in children
- Fever of 100oF or higher
- Drainage of fluid from the ear
- Headache or loss of appetite
Treatment & Prevention
Symptoms of ear infections generally improve within the first couple of days. Providers will typically advise treatments aimed at reducing pain and clearing up the infection. To reduce pain, practitioners may advise the use of over-the-counter acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil & Motrin) or may prescribe anesthetic drops.
Antibiotic therapy may also be recommended. Children with repeated and long-term ear infections or who experience continuous fluid build up in the ear may require ear tubes. For chronic ear infections, it’s best to speak with your child’s pediatrician to determine if this out-patient procedure is right for them.
You can reduce your risk of outer ear infections by keeping your ears dry, particularly after swimming or bathing. You should protect your ears from chemical irritants like hair sprays and hair dyes and avoid putting foreign objects in your ear that can irritate or break the skin.
