It is estimated that 30 million men in the US have suffered with ED. Fortunately, medications for ED have enhanced the quality of life for many. At Chesapeake Telemedicine, we want to improve the accessibility to these life-changing medications by offering discreet and convenient telemedicine visits. Our goal is to remove obstacles and the stigma associated with their use.

What is ED and what medications are used to treat it?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) happens when men have difficulty maintaining an erection firm enough to engage in sexual intercourse. It is more common in older adults, but ED can affect men of all ages.

Medications that work by increasing blood flow to the penis are used to treat ED. When aroused, these medications help men develop and maintain an erection so they can confidently engage in sexual intercourse. Brand names like Viagra and Cialis are the medications most commonly used to treat ED. These medications are also available in generic form.

Who is eligible for Chesapeake Telemedicine’s ED treatment program?

It is important for our patients to understand that Chesapeake Telemedicine has standards we follow when prescribing ED medications. Scheduling an appointment and paying a copay is NOT a guarantee that we will prescribe you a ED medication. During your visit, we will carefully assess your medical history to determine the ED medication that’s best for you. Medications, such as ViagraCialis, and others, can be effective in helping men achieve and maintain erections.

However, it’s essential to be aware of potential contraindications—situations where these medications might not be safe or effective. Here are some important points to consider:

  • Nitrate Medications: If you are taking nitrate medications for chest pain (angina), you should avoid using ED drugs. Nitroglycerin, isosorbide mononitrate, and isosorbide dinitrate are examples of nitrates. Combining nitrates with ED medications can lead to a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
  • Liver or Kidney Disease: People with severe liver or kidney disease should exercise caution
  • Other Medications: Let our providers know about all your current medications, including those for other conditions. Some drugs may interact with ED medications, potentially affecting their effectiveness or safety. These include:
            • Antibiotics or Antifungal Medicines
            • Antiviral Medicines (for hepatitis C or HIV/AIDS)
            • Drugs for high blood pressure or a prostate disorder
            • Seizure Medications

Will my health insurance cover the cost of ED medications?

We cannot determine if your health insurance will pay for your ED medications. Benefit varies by insurance plan. However, if your health insurance does not cover the cost of your medication, you can still pay for the medication out of pocket.

How long will my prescription last?

Chesapeake telemedicine will prescribe you enough pills to last you for one month. Keep in mind the cost of pills range from $4 to $90, depending on the use of generic vs brand names. So the number pills prescribed will depend on your budget and your frequency of use. We encourage you to book a follow-up appointment whenever you need a refill.
