Bronchitis

What is Bronchitis?

Bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchial tubes which causes coughing and mucus production. Bronchitis is often caused by the same viruses that cause the common cold and influenza, bacteria, and other environmental irritants. Acute bronchitis (short-term) often improves within one to two weeks, sometimes with a lingering cough. However, if you experience chronic bronchitis, this may be indicative of a more serious respiratory condition.

Bronchitis Symptoms

Common symptoms of bronchitis (acute or chronic) may include the following:

  • Cough
  • Mucus production (may appear clear, white, or yellowish green in color. Sometimes may appear to be streaked with blood.)
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Wheezing when you breathe
  • Chest Discomfort

Treatment & Prevention

If left untreated, the most common complication of bronchitis is pneumonia. Patients older in age, with weakened immune systems, and those who smoke are more at risk of developing pneumonia because of untreated bronchitis.

If diagnosed with bronchitis, your healthcare provider will typically suggest the following: taking over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen for pain relief and fever reduction, cough medicine, bronchodilators to help clear the mucus, mucolytics to loosen or this the mucus, and anti-inflammatory or steroid drugs to help reduce inflammation.

You can take steps to reduce your risk of developing bronchitis by washing hands frequently to limit exposure to bacteria and germs, wearing a surgical mask, avoiding environmental irritants, and getting your annual influenza vaccination.
