What is a cold sore?
Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are a common viral infection usually caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) resulting in fluid-filled blisters around the mouth. The blisters that form are highly contagious and will become enlarged, burst, then crust over which may lead to irritation and discomfort while healing. Cold sores may be triggered by several things including illness, sun or cold wind exposure, and hormonal changes.
Cold sore symptoms
Common symptoms of cold sores may include the following:
- Tingling sensation before the blister develops
- Fluid-filled blister along the mouth or sometimes around cheeks, nose, or inside of mouth
- Irritation or soreness of the lips and mouth
Treatment & Prevention
Cold sores cannot be cured, but medical treatment may help to minimize or relieve some of the symptoms.
If diagnosed with a cold sore, your healthcare provider may prescribe anti-viral treatments such as topical ointments or oral medications. Additionally, your provider may also suggest over-the-counter (OTC) anesthetics or anti-inflammatory treatments to help with the symptoms.
You can take steps to reduce your risk of developing cold sores by identifying and avoiding what triggers an outbreak. If you have never had a cold sore, you should avoid oral contact with anyone who has an active cold sore. If you do develop a cold sore, Chesapeake Telemedicine is here to help!
