What is conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is the inflammation of the membrane that lines the eyelid (conjunctiva) causing the whites of the eye to pink from swelling and irritation. It is one of the most common and treatable eye conditions. Conjunctivitis can be the result of a viral or bacterial infection, allergic reaction, or in infants – a clogged tear duct. Pink eye can be highly contagious and irritating for patients, however it rarely affects your vision if diagnosed and treated promptly.
What are the symptoms?
- Redness in eye(s)
- Itchiness in one or both eyes
- Eyelid swelling
- Discharge and crusting of eye, may cause difficulty opening eyes in morning
- Watering or tearing of the eyes
- Sensitivity to light
- Feeling like something is in the eye
How can I treat and prevent conjunctivitis?
If left untreated, conjunctivitis can affect your vision if the inflammation spreads to your cornea. More serious eye conditions can occur causing eye pain, light sensitivity and blurred vision. It is therefore important to consult with a healthcare professional to get care and treatment before symptoms worsen.
If diagnosed with conjunctivitis, your healthcare provider may suggest the following treatments: artificial tears, cold or warm compresses, and anti-inflammatory drops. Bacterial conjunctivitis can be treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointment which help shorten the length of infection and reduce complications. Allergic conjunctivitis is best treated by removing exposure to the allergen and with allergy medications including topical antihistamine eye drops.
If you wear contact lenses, your provider will recommend that you discontinue the use of your lenses until treatment is complete and to dispose of the lenses you have previously worn. If you wear glasses, you should disinfect your lenses nightly before each use to avoid spreading the infection.
You can take steps to reduce your risk of developing conjunctivitis by washing your hands often, avoiding touching your face, using clean towels, washing bedding often, avoiding sharing cosmetics, and disposing of old eye cosmetic products.
