What is a respiratory infection?

Respiratory tract infections occur when parts of your respiratory system (sinuses, airways, lungs, or throat) become infected by a virus or bacteria. These infections are commonly divided into two groups: upper respiratory infection (URI) and lower respiratory infections. Respiratory infections that affect the upper system include the common cold, sinusitis, tonsilitis, and laryngitis. Infections of the lower respiratory system include bronchitis, bronchiolitis, chest infections, and pneumonia. Most respiratory symptoms will pass within one to two weeks, however, lower infections tend to last longer and have the potential to become more serious without treatment.

How do I know if I have a respiratory infection?

Common symptoms of respiratory infections include:

  • Cough with or without mucus production
  • Sneezing
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Headaches
  • Body aches
  • Shortness of breath or wheezing
  • Fever

Treatment & Prevention

Bacterial respiratory infections can be treated with antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare provider, but viral respiratory infections cannot be treated with antibiotics. Symptoms usually clear up after a few weeks but your healthcare provider may suggest use of medications to minimize discomfort from the associated symptoms.

If diagnosed with a bacterial infection, your healthcare provider will generally prescribe antibiotics in addition to other medications such as cough suppressants, expectorants, corticosteroids, and pain relievers to help relieve your symptoms.

You can take steps to reduce your risk of developing respiratory infections by regular hand washing, limiting interaction with anyone who is sick, and receiving your annual influenza vaccination.
